Beijing part 1
To Beijing for 3 days.
Main mission - spot check. 😎
First thing I did after I passed the customs was to go to the toilet. Saw this on the toilet cubicle door. Suddenly I'm reminded of my terrible experience of going to toilets in china.
I landed at an unearthly hour of 6.30am.
Luckily my husband came to the airport to fetch me. It took an hour to take the 2 trains (airport express and normal MRT) to 国贸 where my husband stayed and worked.
The first thing we did was find a place for breakfast. My husband was the Jade member of Shangri-la which means he's entitled to daily free breakfast and also free breakfast for one partner. But somehow, the hotel only allowed me to take the free breakfast starting from the second day. The staff explained that I had to spend one night at the hotel first, though I totally don't understand. Alright then.
My husband brought me to 金鼎轩 at 财富中心 which is very near our hotel. We had some dim sum and a super spicy 干捞面. My first realization of how much Beijing people love their spicy dish.
This is a famous old Beijing snack, 褡裢火烧. Too oily. I had to use lots of tissue to at least remove the oil on the surface. Luckily restaurants here provide a lot of free tissue paper.
After the good breakfast, we went back to hotel for a nap. The air quality was really bad and we were lacking sleep. My husband had worked till 11pm the previous night and came to the airport at 6 am to meet me.
In the afternoon, we went to 王府井.
Look at the poor visibility. The air was irking with a burning smell.
There were less people on the street perhaps because of the bad air. The shops along 王府井 are the brands we could see in Singapore, like Zara, Gap, H&M, Starbucks. There wasn't anything exciting to me.
We had an interesting walk through the food street. It sold a lot of interesting food, like
Starfish
Scorpions
Candied fruits and 臭豆腐
Snails and shellfish
Chinese sweets
We didn't buy anything from the food street because it's just too difficult to eat while walking through the heavy crowds. And most of the things are too weird for me. I also noticed that the pricing of the food is so funny. For example, at the beginning of the street (nearest to the main road), each 羊肉串 costs ¥10. As we walked further in, the price dropped to 2 for ¥10, then 4 for ¥10.
Another reason is, we already planned to have Peking duck for dinner!
This is the famous 大董烤鸭店. We all know 全聚德. But 大董 seemed to be the uprising star which is surpassing 全聚德 and this is strongly recommended by my husband's colleague.
Roasting ducks on a stage
The crispy duck came. Yummmmm.
Looked like not oily at all. But it melted in the mouth.
We were told to first try the crispy skin with just sugar.
Then we ate with the condiments.
It was a great dinner. What really ended the dinner perfectly was the little oranges which they served for free. I had the urge to buy some to bring back to singapore.
