Friday shopping

It's Friday but I woke up at 7am, because we wanted to go to the Wholesale Market. It is in Salwa Road, pretty far from our villa, since our colleague and her nanny were planing to go, we thought there's no harm tagging along and go take a look. After so many years in Doha, this is the first time we are visiting this market. Well, I am happy with getting my fresh food supplies from the hypermarket.

It's already Summer now, the weather is hot and dry. There were also very strong winds these 2 days which means any moisture you have on your skin, lips or eyes are instantly taken away. It's not a very good time to stay outdoors, we are risking dehydration and heat stress to go to this market.

We reached the market at about 8am. The vegetable market is a very open area with the vendors just laying out their goods to sell. There were no stalls, tables, chairs, shelves, nor cashiers,. Just buying and selling.

I have no idea who he is, but hey thanks for posing. Sorry we didn't buy from you.

We bought potatoes, kangkung, sponge gourds and a cut of watermelon. I forgot to take a picture of the ancient weighing balance they use for charging. It's those see-saw type which you put the item on one end and metal weights on the other. It doesn't seem very accurate but we're only buying QR10 of vegetables, so just let it be.

Then we moved to the Fish Market, which is adjacent to the Vegetable Market. The Fish Market is a proper building with air conditioning. I could smell the fishes 30m away from the Entrance!

Surprisingly it was less smelly inside the building, or maybe my nose has accustomed to the smell. The market is clean and dry, the floors could be even dryer than the wet markets in Singapore. There were 30+ stall inside selling fishes and other seafood.

I was not impressed by the variety nor price of the goods. We just roamed around, and just to make it not feel like a wasted trip, we bought 2 rabbit fish and a belt fish.

The vegetable market has more variety of vegetables than the hypermarkets, especially the green leafy type. However, I got this feeling that I may be overcharged because I do not know what is the right price and their weighing method seems to be inaccurate. And I do not like to bargain, I usually pay the price they quote as long as it is not over the moon. On the other hand, I think I prefer to buy fishes/prawns in hypermarkets because the variety in this Fish Market is not that much, again the weighing method is dubious and they don't provide de-scaling and de-gilling services. Notice that the fishes we bought are those without scales. De-scaling and cleaning fishes at home is really a messy and smelly experience.

Another thing I've noticed - hardly any women in the markets. The local women here do not have to do marketing.
