Copy-R-I-G-H-T

I'm referring to the recent news in the papers about the arrest of a few people who illegally download or share music on the net.

This piracy or infringement of copyright thing is not new. I was told it is not right, and now it's a crime. I know, I know, everyone says it's wrong. I know why people say it's wrong. Don't start lecturing me about intellectual property rights and so on.

I know but I don't understand.

To say that "music is free" is too idealistic. However, when we pay for the music we listen to, who are we paying? Most of the record companies, famous singers and musicians are wearing designers, living in luxuries but yet speaking about how sharing of music on the net is ruining their livelihood. How hypocritical can they get? Name me a pop idol who is dying of hunger and living on the streets please. And it's not the struggling singer who cannot pay for his rent, I'm not talking about those whose music nobody downloads.

Once upon a time, someone told me the law only protects the rich. I'm somehow convinced now.

If those people are using the music to make money, they should be arrested of course, for e.g. those pirated VCD/DVD sellers. However, many people are just sharing the files on the internet. They didn't call it their own and they do not make money out of it. What harms are they causing? The only act they are guilty of is to share.

Perhaps you think I say so because I'm one of the downloaders. I'm not a big fan of music, I can do with or without it, thus I'm not willing to pay for it. Hey, pay $20+ for a piece of CD, you can't even share with your neighbour? A bit... ridiculous.

Have you heard of "copyleft"? It is a way of using the copyright laws to ensure that every person who receives a copy of a work has the same rights to study, use, modify, and also redistribute both the work and derived versions of the work (Wikipedia). This sounds like the true spirit of an artiste/inventor to me.

Haha, I think I'm starting to sound like a communist. I'm just angry that we are asked to follow rules that only benefit a minority. Perhaps, in the near future, only the rich can enjoy music. Poor commoners like us can only listen things which they "bestowed" upon us or else secretly listen to them in fear of being arrested.

What sludgecake!
