Working Late
- The T&C manager of CH2Mhill, the last person whom I thought will care what time I work until... as long as I finish the work on time.
- My PM.
I was quite amused by the former. I guessed I had a misconception of consultants - 小人之心度君子之腹。 After I received his email that morning, I happened to bump into him. He started to lecture me on how it's important to set time aside for things other than work.
He also began explaining to me how important project planning is. If a project is well planned, engineers do not have to work late. I agree. I know it's disgraceful that I have to work late to finish my tasks. It actually meant that my management skills are not good. After his lectures, I realized I've learned a lot from him.
Grateful.
Today, my PM also talked to me on why I worked late. Is it because I have too many things to do? And why don't I delegate out work to other engineers under me.
Good question.
I explained to him that I only stay back late to finish up work that were urgent e.g. preparation for testings scheduled the next day morning or document submissions that were already late. And since they were urgent, I wanted to complete them asap, so the quickest way was to do them myself. Training others to do it requires a much longer time.

In the end, I questioned myself too. WHY?
Perhaps I'm not cut out to be a leader. I'm nearly a freshie myself, asking me to lead others is like the blind leading the blind. Most of the time, I'm not even sure of the correct procedure of doing something and needed time to study. How do I guide others to do it?
Anyway, my Ulu Pandan team mates have probably laughed till they fell off their chairs by now. 1 am is not late at all! It's actually a normal time to knock off during UPNP T&C period. Ask Steven who has spent many nights in the site office. Ask Tay who was a safety hazard to himself. Ask Soo Beng and Chee Pieu who were thought to be "mentally abnormal" during the peak season. Ask Tian who had to send me home nearly every night. Ask Huang Huang who drove 5754 through gates which closed on her. Etc etc.
Missed those times when we worked late together.

Learn to take things easy..haha..dont be like me..fall so sick then no choice..in the end, more things pile up..WORSE~~~
Actually I'm also not a good lead, comm problem with other, cannot control own temper.
I miss UPNP time also.
