FYP Interim Presentations
You may be wondering what has the FYP interim presentations has got to do with me. I've long finished my FYP... so long that I can't really remember how I survived then.
Now, in the lab, this batch of FYP students are 2 years my junior. Last week was their interim presentations. I have spent my last week vetting some of their presentation slides. And after that, have to reassure them that they have done well enough. And for those who think they have not performed, comfort them, encourage them.
Nobody got depression because of FYP interim before, so I don't want to see the first.
You get to see all kinds of reactions they have towards it. But ultimately, we can narrow it down to 2 types
1. Care
2. Heck care
Haha... this doesn't sound very insightful.
The amusing part I found is why some people do not care about their FYPs. It is a definite requirement to graduation. After spending 4 years sloughing for an Engineering degree, why would you want to give up at the last stage?
It makes me wonder.
Of course, different people have different priorities. What is important to you may not be all that important to another person. When I'm studying for my Bachelor degree, it is the most important thing to me. Now, this MEng degree is the most important to me. I can sacrifice anything, time with family and friends, my hobby (I have stopped my Chinese calligraphy lessons because I "refused" to allocate time for it), chance to earn more money (I have forsaken my tuition students), etc. I seemed to have nothing more important on my mind than this mad meritocracy race.
Is this stupid? Is this wise?
Focusing on just one goal in life is perhaps too risky. But I do not know another way out. The government kept advocating a balanced lifestyle. Initially, I thought they are extremely simplistic. Now...
Perhaps, I'm the one who is simplistic. Why do I only focus on only one thing? Can't I do just as well if I focus on two tasks or more? Why do I deny myself the chance to excel in more than one area (if I can, that is)?
And they say women are good at multi-tasking. I can't even multi-think.
To the FYP students: do not be disheartened by minor set-backs. Not all is lost. The final presentation and thesis is the most important.

Horrors! How can you give up your hobby? Sure, the MEng is important but everyone needs some time off to do things that will relax them, things that they like. Give up playing music just for that piece of paper? Live my life as though I have none? Perish the thought. So should you.
U wrote a great article gal =). I enjoy reading ur tots.. keep writing and jia you in ur research!
nicely written.. u r right.. as students, stduying/mugging is our foremost duty if not obligation..
I'm glad its coming to an end though, cant wait for the next phase in life.. new phase new chance... =p
